STORYTELLER

Hi, I’m Alicia.

I didn’t always know how to answer the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” But I did know one thing: If I could read all day, I would. And somehow, that’s exactly what I’ve managed to do. For my day job, I am the editorial specialist in Goodwin’s Department of Marketing and Communications. There, I work with Goodwin authors—typically laywers—and client development teams to write and edit content, ranging from web copy and marketing collateral to long-form thought leadership pieces and distinctive editorial products that help build business and elevate the brand.

For Me…

Writing is my peace work. It is a practice that clarifies and edifies my thoughts.

Editing is an opportunity to wield my pattern recognition skills and engage in ethical world-building. The words on a page or a screen have power; together, we can find the words, imagery, and theses to create more just realities.

Storytelling is an exploration of connections, useful oppositions, and life’s counterintuitive ideas and patterns.

Brass Tacks

I received my BFA in Writing, Literature, and Publishing from Emerson College and my MA in Media, Culture, and Communication from the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. While there, I focused my research on the representation of the environment in the media. I am certified by the Editorial Freelancers Association for intermediate copyediting and editing for conscious and inclusive language.

Writing

To write, I engage with the world first, whether that’s through reading or listening to a podcast or chatting with a neighbor. Once my curiosity is sparked and I start to formulate a guiding question, I consider the best mediums and avenues for investigation. Then, the research period begins. I love counterintuitive storytelling, engaging with unexpected ideas or patterns in the world and the story that has historically been erased from history. Finding the angle that is different or difficult even is often where truth lies.

Editing

I enjoy changing passive voice into active, thwarting dangling or misplaced modifiers, and verifying a fact beyond the conventional Google search so you don’t have to. I am passionate about conscious and inclusive language, always questioning my own biases and determining where I can learn more. Working with writers to revise a sentence to ensure their desired message is coming across is my favorite moment of the editing process.
